The Neuroanesthesia division is supported by five consultants well trained in neuroanesthesia. The faculties are well known in the country for their participation in national and international conferences and publications in peer-reviewed journals. The faculties are actively involved in the teaching and training of students. The division admits three candidates for DM (Neuroanesthesiology), a three year training program, and two candidates for one year training, PDCC (Post Doctoral Certificate Course) every year. The admission process is by a common entrance exam held during November every year. In addition, sponsored candidates from various institutions in the country undergo training in DM.

Services

The Neuroanesthesia Division is one of the most well equipped department in the country which provides perioperative care to patients undergoing neurosurgical and neuroendovascular procedures. Our neurosurgical Service deals with a high volume of challenging cases involving the brain and spinal cord. Approximately 1500 surgical procedures involving the brain are done annually, which include complex intracranial tumor craniotomies, open neurovascular craniotomies, complex neurovascular bypass procedures, sitting craniotomies, stereotactic procedures, image guided neurosurgery, and epilepsy surgeries. Spine surgeons perform approximately 300 major spine procedures annually, which include spine decompression and fusion, spinal instrumentation, and spinal cord tumor surgery.

The department is actively involved in the administration of anesthesia to patients undergoing neurodiagnostic and neurointerventional procedures in the radiology department. Each year, over 300 general anesthetics are provided to patients receiving endovascular treatment for conditions such as aneurysms (ruptured and non-ruptured), arteriovenous malformations, carotid stenosis, CNS tumor and fistula embolilzations, and vertebroplasties, WADA test and Jugular venous oxygen saturation monitoring is performed during embolization procedures.

The department is actively involved in the intensive care management of postoperative neurosurgical patients including postoperative pain relief. Various neurologically ill patients requiring ventilation are managed by invasive and non invasive state of the art ventilators. Percutaneous tracheostomy is performed in patients requiring long term ventilation. The department is actively involved in the intensive care management of stroke patients including sedation for intra arterial thrombolysis.
